Meet Mozzie

Hi, I’m Mozzie. I’m an 8-year-old, purebred male Golden Retriever. DOB: 6/5/2017. I weigh approximately 75 pounds. Every ounce of me is full of love for YOU!

I was surrendered to AGN from a family with young children who were not able to meet my needs. I developed anxiety in certain situations, mostly associated with a crate (I should NEVER be crated!) and have typical Golden allergies that needed medical attention. They knew that AGN would get me healthy and find me a wonderful forever family, allowing me to live my best life. And wow…I’m really doing that in my foster home! Someone will hit the jackpot with me!

Attributes

Personality Traits

Affectionate, sweet, devoted, loyal, snuggly and happy! I’m a well-mannered gentleman who’s the ultimate “velcro shadow.” I’m what you’d call a “people-dog” through and through…oh how I adore my humans! My love is endless! I have the sweetest personality imaginable. I live to be loved and feel safe. That safety is typically being with you. I’m the definition of a very best friend. The joy of my life is being with you…whatever you’re doing! I’ve mastered the art of relaxation, but I’m always ready for a walk or a good game of fetch. I feed off the energy around me. Calm humans and calm home? Calm and relaxed Mozzie! Predictable routine with exercise, mental stimulation and enrichment games? Happy and confident Mozzie! Lots of love, time and affection? Safe and secure Mozzie! I flourish in a calm, steady environment where I know I’m loved. I’m a gentle soul with a few quirks (scissors are a firm “no thank you”), but my kind spirit will melt your heart.

Status with People

LOVE all people! Social and polite. I treat everyone like a long-lost friend. I bond quickly and seek affection. On walks, I greet strangers with a joyful tail wag. I lived with children in my previous home and am good with them. I’d do best with older, dog-savvy children who are respectful of a dog’s boundaries.

Status with Dogs

Are you selective with who your friends are? Me, too! I’m compatible with some dogs, but prefer to be the only dog in the home. I’m not a fan of other male dogs and prefer my safe space away from them. I’m typically fine with calm, female dogs who are smaller than me. With that said, I simply prefer to be the King of the Manor and be the only dog to soak up all the love and attention. No matter what dog I’m around, I’ll guard my toys and food giving them a snap warning. When I first arrived at my previous foster home with three male Goldens, I communicated my boundaries clearly (sometimes firmly) and could be possessive over high-value items around other dogs. I just didn’t feel safe with all those dogs around me. Now that I’m the only dog in my foster home, I’m relaxed and thriving. On leash, I walk past dogs calmly and typically just ignore them. I’m simply not interested in dog friendships. All of my devotion is toward my humans!

Status with Cats

Previous owner stated good with cats.I’ve ignored neighborhood cats and critters on walks. Slow, supervised introductions would always be recommended for any permanent feline roommate.

Favorite Toys

Love my toys! Kongs with goodies such as peanut butter, etc. and enrichment toys like my Snoop. I love fetch with my Chuck-It balls, though sometimes I need to “trade for a treat” to drop the ball for another throw. I also love to play a good game of tug with my humans. Enrichment puzzles, snuffle mats, lick mats, etc. are all good for me. *Important note: I share with humans, but prefer to enjoy high-value toys privately away from other dogs. All new toys can be guard worthy, but my not old toys.

Energy Level

Moderate. I enjoy walks daily up to 3 and 1/2 miles, combined with fun enrichment toys like my Snoop or Kong. I also enjoy playing fetch in the backyard. I’m equally happy lounging and relaxing near my person after I get my physical exercise.

House Trained

Yes. I wait by the door to signal I need to go out. *AGN recommends you train me to Poochie Bells so that I can give clear communication that you can hear.

Crate Trained

NEVER should be crated in my home!!! Being crated for long hours away from my family in my precious home contributed to separation anxiety. It also caused me to panic and break a tooth trying to escape from the metal “cage”. I just had surgery to repair the tooth. The good news? I do NOT need a crate. I have excellent house manners and full roaming privileges in my foster home. I do great!

House Manners

Impeccable. I don’t counter surf, chew inappropriate items, or even jump on furniture without permission. When invited I do love to snuggle up with you on the couch, so I’d like a family who wants to share cuddle time on the couch together. I’ll put my head in your lap and sweetly snore as you pet me. I prefer my comfy dog beds to nap during the day and sleep in a dog bed right by my foster mom at night. I just want to be close.

Leash Manners

Great with my Walk Your Dog With Love harness. I’m always ready to go investigate a fun park for walking and sniffing! Let me sniff as it’s great mental stimulation for me!

Exercise

Important! A body in motion stays in motion, and I like to move! About an hour of walking per day is ideal. Multiple shorter walks during the week and longer adventure walks on weekends are my current schedule. I also enjoy fetch in the yard and enrichment toys. I’d make a wonderful hiking companion for gentle hikes. I’m always happy to stroll through the neighborhood and love to visit different area parks to extra mental stimulation.

Car Rides

Great traveler. Calm, quiet, and enjoy the backseat. I alternate between napping and keeping you gentle company. I’m a stress-free road trip partner, so let’s go to the beach or lake for some fun.

Basic Commands

Sit, stay, come, down (lie down), shake, back up, come up (with permission), and more. I’m very responsive and well-mannered. I’m treat motivated and eager to please!

Medical Needs

Currently on low dose anxiety medication, which is working very well for me. This has been helpful with all the change I’ve been through. My foster family has not seen any abnormal anxiety, but I’m NOT crated at all, which was a part of the issue in my previous home. I adjust quickly in calm, stable, predictable environments with a lot of time, exercise and affection. I also had minor ear and skin issues from allergies that have resolved with vet treatment and diet adjustments. My diet is supplemented with Nordic Naturals Omega Pet to decrease inflammation for allergies, etc. I also take Dasequin as a joint supplement as I age. At certain times of year, I may have allergy flares.

Things I need in my Forever Home

  • Someone who understands what I’ve been through and is committed to meeting my needs of routine, exercise, mental stimulation and lots of time spent with me as the focus of your affection! Just call me “Super Glue’!
  • Calm and quiet household where I can feel safe and relaxed.
  • Moderately active family that is committed to daily exercise such as strolls through the neighborhood and parks, leisurely hikes through the trails, fun adventures, etc. I thrive with exercise!
  • Someone who enjoys spending lots of time with their furbaby at home and on the go…I’m a “hang out with you” kind of fella and a great traveler.
  • I crave human affection, so I’m unhappy if left alone for long hours. I need someone who’s home most of the time. I would not do well home alone more than a few short hours.
  • Someone who’s willing to execute a specific protocol before leaving the home…it’s easy! Take me for a walk and then give me a peanut butter Kong, etc. before you leave. This just takes the edge off before you go. Then I’m absolutely fine for 2-3 hours. The home security camera shows that I’m relaxed on my bed or enjoying my stuffed Kong.
  • I need to be an only dog with someone who’s going to be my best friend and spend lots of time with me.
  • Older children who are on the calm side and respect the boundaries of dogs are fine.
  • I need orthopedic dog beds to protect my joints and bring me comfort when I nap and sleep. I love my comfy dog beds!
  • NO CRATES!

If you’re looking for a super sweet, gentle, happy, loving soul to make your life complete, look no further! You’ll wonder how you spent a day without me in your life because I’ll bring you so much love and joy. I’m an laid back, joyful Golden who wants nothing more than to thrive with your love and affection…and some toys and balls, please! I may have a sad past, but this new chapter of my life is going to be something special with you by my side!

      Luv, Mozzie
