Meet Maverick
My name is Maverick! I’m approximately10 months old. My birthday is estimated as 12/24/2024. I only weigh 50 pounds. Although still growing, I need to reach an ideal weight of 65-70 pounds.
I was surrendered by a family that had several children and other dogs. They wanted a better life for me where I would get the care and attention I deserve.
Attributes
Personality Traits
Everyone I meet is a new best friend, I’m so joyful. I’m your typical growing puppy who’s curious, silly, easily excited, rambunctious and energetic. I also love cuddles and will lay next to you or under your feet when relaxing. I love being wherever the activity is and will follow you just about every time you get up. Everything is a game to me, even you trying to towel me off or brush me. I need LOTS of force free guidance and direction, as I’m immature and still learning the world. I’m so eager to please and highly trainable. When I get excited, I have a habit of mouthing people’s hands, so redirecting me with a ball or toy is essential. I also jump on everyone and am learning “no jump”.
Status with People
I love everyone I meet and am good with humans of all ages. In my last home, I lived with four children, ages 2 to 10 years. In foster, I have been around the 4 year old grand baby but my playfulness is too much, as I want to lick, jump on her and take any food she’s carrying. My foster home has a 92 year old great grandmother as well. I’m friendly with her too, but will try to steal any food she has. Her walker doesn’t spook me one bit.
Status with Dogs
I’m excellent around other dogs. I really need a dog buddy to play with. There’re older dogs in my foster home and they get annoyed with me as I regularly try to engage them in play.
Status with Cats
My prior home reported that I was good with cats. AGN cannot confirm.
Favorite Toys
I love to chew! Benebones/Nylabones and durable chews/toys are ideal for me. Outside, I love to carry around sticks and will retrieve the ball, though I am still learning to “drop it”. Trade me for a treat or use a second ball, and I’ll learn in no time.
Energy Level
High energy older puppy! I go on several walks throughout the day, approximately 3 miles daily. Indoors, I regularly have bursts of playful energy. With positive redirection, I’ll settle down and chew a bone. I need lots of physical exercise, mental stimulation and canine enrichment to meet my needs.
House Trained
I’m potty trained, but do need to go out every 3-4 hours during the day. I sleep through the night without issue.
Crate Trained
Yes, but I spent too much time in a crate in my prior home, so please don’t crate me for long periods. Limiting my access with a baby gate would be a much better option for me.
House Manners
I have very good house manners, but PUPPY PROOF!!! My foster mom has left me free in the house for 3-4 hours at a time and I didn’t make any messes. I’m still in my puppy chewing stage, and though I haven’t damaged anything in my foster home, all small items left out would be at risk.
Leash Manners
I still pull on the leash, so please use the Walk Your Dog With Love Harness that AGN will send with me, as it discourages pulling in the most humane way.
Exercise
I need daily walks of at least 2-3 miles daily, plus play time inside the house and outside in the fenced yard. I need dog friends to run, romp and play with to meet my socialization needs and physical exercise needs.
Car Rides
I love to go for rides. It takes me several tries to learn how to get into a new car, so I need a gentle and patient teacher. Steps to load in and out of the backseat would be great for me.
Basic Commands
I have excellent recall when you call my name. I know sit, down, shake, wait and am learning “Trade for a Treat” and “drop it”.
Things I need in my Forever Home
- I need to have another dog to play with. Another dog will help discharge some of my energy and serve as a canine mentor. If I don’t have this, my human must be prepared to give me extra exercise and activity. There would also need to be a socialization plan in place for me to play with other dogs almost daily. An adopter who has the patience and energy for a young, mostly untrained dog that is mostly puppy. I require above average attention and effort, so if you’re looking for a “easy” dog, I’m not the one for you.
- Someone who will walk me at least 2-3 miles daily. I’d also be a good hiking buddy or outdoor adventure companion. I need mental challenges and stimulation, in addition to physical exercise.
- Although good with children, they should be sturdy on their feet and mature enough to understand that I’m also a juvenile who will mouth hands/arms, steal food, jump up and tear up toys/shoes left on the floor.
- An adopter that is has a flexible schedule and home more than not. I don’t want to be left alone for more than 4-5 hours at a time. I’m an older puppy and need someone committed to my force free training, physical exercise and mental stimulation.
If you’re seeking a young dog to be your constant companion and very best friend, I’m your guy. I ‘m loyal, good-natured, goofy, and affectionate, all rolled into one. I bring joy wherever I am. If you give me the exercise, routine, attention and affection that I require, I’ll be the most loving and loyal friend anyone could ask for.
