Meet Lucky
Hi, I’m Lucky. I’m an almost 1 year old, male Golden Retriever mix (most likely with some Great Pyrenees). My DOB is estimated by the vet to be 1/30/24. I currently weigh 48 pounds. I’m very lean. It’s important that I stay that way because I’m special with only three legs. They call me a “tripod”.
AGN rescued me from a rural shelter who had minimal resources. They needed help to save my life. I was surrendered to the shelter after a terrible accident where my leg was broken and severely injured. I didn’t get medical attention after the accident so my leg was healing in the wrong position. Someone let me suffer for over a month. The volunteer heroes of AGN rushed to get me. They took me immediately to the vet. I couldn’t use my leg at all. The only option was amputation based on multiple diagnostics and consultation with the orthopedic surgeon. Surgery was successful. It was removing dead weight from the leg that was just burdening me. After the surgery, I was immediately mobile and happy. I’m doing great with my balance and building strength daily. Nothing stops me now! I’m something special and someone will be blessed to have me as a part of their family. I’m truly a lucky puppy!

Personality Traits
Happy, super sweet, loving, loyal, snuggly, social, energetic, kind natured, lover of the outdoors! I’m a survivor who’s resilient and determined to live my best life…running, romping, playing and even wrestling with my furry friends. I have endless enthusiasm and joyful exuberance! I’m building strength and balance. I need someone who looks at me and sees my potential…I have a lot to be maximized. Don’t feel sorry for me. Look at me as a special older pup who sees nothing but the life in front of me. To know me to love me!
![statuswithpeople](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/statuswithpeople.png)
Status with People
Social butterfly who never meets a stranger. Everyone is my friend! I love attention and affection. I’m good with children, but they should be older and sturdy on their feet as I’m not always sturdy on my feet. I might knock tiny humans down by accident in excitement or if I fall down (I’ll bounce right back up, by the way!).
![statuswithdogs](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/statuswithdogs.png)
Status with Dogs
Good with dogs! Love to play (lying down so I don’t get knocked down) and love to snuggle with my furry foster siblings. I’m good with both genders. I have four female foster sisters and a male Lab that visits often. I’m neutral in temperament and go with the flow. I do have some Great Pyrenees traits to be loyal, so I should be introduced to new dogs on neutral territory outside of the home. This ensures we’ll be compatible. Also, as a tripod I’m at a disadvantage if another dog gets fussy with me.
![statuswithcats](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/statuswithcats.png)
Status with Cats
Likely fine. Met a cat once and followed it around with my tail wagging, but I’m all about a squirrel chase so I might chase a cat if it runs.
![toys](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/toys.png)
Favorite Toys
Big tug rope toys and balls! I can be a “stuffy murderer” so strong, durable stuffies such as Fluff and Tuff, Go Dog, Kong, Tuffy and Huggle Hound brands are best for me.
![energylevel](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/energylevel.png)
Energy Level
Moderate energy overall. I get lots of playtime with my furry foster sisters, squirrel chasing in the backyard, ball playing and a 1 mile walk per day. I’m not as high energy as a purebred Golden at my age.

House Trained
Yes. I don’t signal when I need to go out, so I need to go outside on a schedule every couple of hours.
***AGN recommends that you train my to Poochie Bells so I can provide clear communication when I need to go out.
![cratetrained](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/cratetrained.png)
Crate Trained
No. There’s a crate in the bedroom if I choose to go in (which I do occasionally on my own), but I have free roam with the other dogs. I sleep on an orthopedic dog bed in my foster parents’ room at night. I’m always snuggled up on a dog bed with one of my furry foster sisters.
![housemanners](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/housemanners.png)
House Manners
Good house manners for an older puppy, but puppy proof. I like to occasionally puppy chew on things such as a chair leg, etc. so puppy proof the house and keep an eye on me.
![leash](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/leash.png)
Leash Manners
Very good. Rarely pull and it’s only a bit if I see a squirrel. A harness that does not affect my balance is best for me. Please let me set the pace as this helps my balance.
![exercise](https://www.adoptagoldennashville.org/wp-content/uploads/exercise.png)
Exercise
It’s very important that I get exercise that will keep my hind end and back leg strong. I go for a 1 mile walk per day and that’s critical for me. Let me set the pace as that helps me with balance. If you are not into walking your dog, I’m NOT the dog for you. The goal is to continue to build strength through activity and that includes daily walking. I play in the backyard with my furry foster sisters, but typically lie down while I’m wrestling. Also, swimming would be great for me. Adding in mental stimulation such as nose works would be wonderful for me. My potential is endless with the right activities.

Car Rides
I like to ride in the car, but a need a little boost to get in. A ramp would be good for me as long as you lead me and help me with my balance so that I don’t fall off.

Medical Needs
My surgery was successful and I’m doing fantastic. My biggest needs to stay healthy with three legs are to remain lean (I’ll look skinny to others) and keep my hind end and back leg strong through appropriate exercise. Joint supplements like glucosamine and Omega 3’s can help support my remaining legs and joints.

Things I need in my Forever Home
- Someone who understands the needs of a tripod dog, or is willing to research and learn. I’ll need assistance sometimes. My person should be able to physically assist me if needed.
- Someone fully committed to keeping me at a lean weight through a healthy diet and daily exercise – THIS IS CRITICAL for my well-being.
- Someone who puts in effort into anti-slipping techniques and a tripod friendly home. Things such as minimal stairs and carpet or rugs. Keeping my nails trimmed and fur trimmed on paw pads is important. Even toe grips could be used to avoid slipping. Ramps or carpeted stairs for cars and furniture. A raised feeder/water to assist with balance.
- Someone who wants and understands an older puppy and all the fun, time, and sometimes frustration that comes with it. I’m still learning.
- Moderately active family committed to daily walks. Someone who understands the importance this plays in my building and maintaining strength for long-term health.
- Someone who doesn’t work, works from home or works part time as I’m used to my family being home with me and my furry siblings. I thrive in this environment because I’m young, active and need someone with the time to commit to my exercise and training. I also need supervision throughout the day in case I need assistance.
- Positive reinforcement obedience training classes are REQUIRED – this will help us bond and build our relationship. It’s so much fun and my potential should be maximized. ***AGN recommends DogsandKat.com
- Must have a nice, active dog that will snuggle up with me on dog beds and play gently with me. They should enjoy typical dog play, just not overly assertive. My dog companion should enjoy sharing toys as I like to play tug with my ropes. I love to play, snuggle and thrive with another dog companion.
- Children should be older, understand my needs and sturdy on their feet. They should know how to respect the boundaries of a dog.
I may be physically different than most dogs, but that makes me unique and special. You’ll have a story to tell when we meet people. I might even be an inspiration to others, especially those with amputated limbs. I’m an amazing older puppy who’s had a sad start to life, but looking at a bright future. I love everyone and everyone I’ve met loves me. I’ll bring joy into the lives of my future family. I have a purpose in life, so let’s start living our best lives together!
