Meet Leo
Hi, my name is Leo. I’m a 4 year old Golden Retriever. DOB: 3/13/20. I have white on my chest and a cute white spot on my head. It’s a recessive gene variant passed during breeding. It makes me especially gorgeous and unique! I weigh 81 pounds.
I was surrendered to AGN because my “mom” is moving out of state with her boyfriend and could not take me as he has two dogs already. She got me from a Golden breeder at 6 weeks old, loved me and knew that AGN would find the perfect forever family for me.
Attributes
Personality Traits
Super sweet, super smart, snuggly, social, loving, happy, playful, and active! I’m the ultimate ‘velcro shadow” who adores my humans. I’m a “needy” Golden with some initial trust issues. I live to be loved, craving human affection. I sometimes resource guard (likely due to a bad experience at a board and train which created initial trust issues). Trading with me for a treat and having two balls to throw during fetch is key. My foster will show you how. I’m a fun-loving Golden who enjoys both outdoor activities with my family and cuddling up on the couch to snuggle. I’ll impress you with the high level of commands that I know and have the potential to do most anything. Yes, I’m awesome!
Status with People
Social and friendly with everyone. I just want to be petted by everyone…anyone! Good with older children. I lived with a teenager in my previous home. Due to resource guarding, children should be older, dog experienced and respectful of my boundaries when I have a toy or ball.
Status with Dogs
Good with other dogs, both male and female. I have Labrador siblings and a senior Beagle in my foster home. I play all day with the 3-year old female and go on daily walks. We love our walks! I’m great with other dogs as long as the don’t try to take my toys or ball from me. I don’t always want to share. If a dog respects my boundaries and clear communication, then we’re buddies. After an initial adjustment, I now trust my foster siblings not to take things from me, so we do great together. I’m neutral in temperament. I went to doggy daycare while my previous owner went to work.
Status with Cats
Good with cats and lived with one in my previous home. AGN cannot confirm as there are no cats in my foster home.
Favorite Toys
LOVE all toys and balls! You’ll see me with multiple in my mouth. Ball-obsessed and love to play fetch. The key is to use two balls…one to throw and the second ball to throw for me to drop the first one. I’m trading one ball for the other that way you don’t have to take it from me. Watch me with stuffies as I can “murder” them quickly. Then I just proudly carry around the “carcass”. I need toys for tough chewers such as Tuffy, Go Dog, Huggle Hound.
Energy Level
Moderate energy. Active and energetic outside with my furry foster siblings, but will settle down for snuggles inside on the couch when tired. Need a human that enjoys exercising their Golden in various settings. Some of my favorite things are walking, hiking and swimming. I love to sniff and explore!
House Trained
Yes, but no signals given. I go in and out throughout the day. ***AGN recommends that I be trained to Poochie Bells as it gives me a clear method of communication to let you know that I need to go potty.
Crate Trained
Traumatic experience being crated in my previous home. Crate is NOT needed. I’m good with free access to all areas of the home.
House Manners
Well-mannered gentleman! I have free roam without issue. Not destructive other than the poor innocent “stuffies”. I sleep on an orthopedic dog bed at the foot of the bed.
Leash Manners
Good on leash. Pull occasionally, but responsive to redirection. Walk great with my Walk Your Dog With Love harness.
Exercise
Like all Goldens, I must have daily exercise. I’m accustomed to lots of running with my furry foster siblings in the yard and multiple daily walks of 1-2 miles each time. Daily walks where I can sniff are important as I love to explore and it’s good mental stimulation. I LOVE water and love to swim. Hiking would be great for me, as well. I’m happiest when I’m active with my favorite human!
Car Rides
Great in the car and ready for all road trips. Happily get in and out.
Basic Commands
IMPRESSIVE! Sit, Shake, Down (Lie Down), Drop It, Bang (to play dead), Here, Stay, Touch, Place. I know my name well as it’s part of my identity. It will set me back to change it, so AGN requests that you keep it!
Storm Phobia
Storms are scary and I hide. Just leave me alone when I seek my safe place. It may be a closet or even the shower. I’m not destructive, I just want to be in a spot that I feel safe…let me choose it. When I feel comfortable, I’ll rejoin family activities. My foster family is working on some techniques to help me feel more secure during storms.
Things I need in my Forever Home
- Experienced dog owner who recognizes and respects a dog’s body language and signals – I need to trust those around me when I have my toys and ball. I’m a good communicator and you just need to know what I’m “saying”. My body language and signals tell all.
- Active to moderately active family that likes to exercise daily by taking lots of walks, hikes and fun outdoor adventures. I need a family that enjoys exercise, fun outdoor activities with their dog(s) and wants a doggy companion by their side.
- I’d be good as an only dog as long as you spend most of your time with me. You’ll need to play with me a lot and get me significant outdoor exercise. I crave human affection and will typically choose my humans over other dogs. If an only dog, I need dog friends to have play dates with.
- If another dog in the home, compatibility is critical. My dog companion should be neutral and stable in temperament…NOT a dog that tries to take toys or balls from me as it could lead to an altercation. They should be fine sharing toys and have no resource guarding since I have resource guarding. They should know how to read my signals and respect my boundaries when I have toys and/or a ball. Otherwise, I’m great with other dogs and love to play.
- Children should be 12 years and older with dog experience and respect the boundaries of a dog.
- Although I’m highly trained in commands, positive reinforcement training classes are always recommended. This will help us bond and build our relationship. I’m super smart, eager to learn, and it’s great for all involved. I’d be good at “nose works” because I love to use my sniffer. ***AGN recommends dogsandkat.com
I love and cherish my humans and crave your love and affection. I desire to feel safe and secure. I need to trust those around me due to my past. I need someone who understands dogs and their emotional needs. I’m a rescue dog who’s been through a lot recently. With that said, I’ve overcome and I’m thriving! If you’re looking for a true companion who’s full of love to give…a sweetheart who loves to go for daily walks, play, relax and snuggle, then look no further! I’m patiently waiting to find my forever special someone. Could it be you?
