Meet Kay Kay
Hi, I’m Kehlani. My friends call me “Kay Kay”, I’m a 2 year old Golden Retriever. DOB: 3/15/2023. I weigh 68 pounds.
I was surrendered to AGN because my family didn’t have time for a high energy puppy with three children and busy schedules. I wasn’t able to get the physical exercise, mental stimulation and basic training that a pup needs. I spent the majority of my time in a crate day and night, so I’m learning for the first time. I’m looking for a family who has the time, energy and commitment to meet my needs. Could you be my special someone?
Attributes

Personality Traits
- Typical Golden “teenager”
- Happy and excitable
- Playful and fun
- Smart and spunky
- Loves everyone
- Jumpy in excitement
- Sweet and loving
- Starved for affection and attention
- Loves to cuddle on the couch
- Can be nervous of new things due to lack of exposure, but I learn quickly
- With time and socialization, I’ll continue to build confidence and continue learning. I must feel safe and secure. Right now, I’m learning how to be a dog

Status with People
- Love everyone
- Excitable and jumpy upon meeting new people, but settle down quickly
- Friendly, social and loves to cuddle with you
- Good with children, but could knock down small children as I’m bouncy, mouthy, and will play chase when they run – kind of a rambunctious girl who’d be best playing with older children

Status with Dogs
- Good with dogs (both genders), but not all dogs love me as I’m “a lot” of excitable play
- Learning dog communication skills, especially how to read other dogs’ signals and respect their boundaries, so I’m a bit socially awkward right now. I’m learning from my foster Golden siblings each day
- I migrate toward male dogs to play with and need a bit of an adjustment period to new dogs before I start playing with them – a little time to figure each other out
- Love to run, wrestle and play once I feel safe and secure with the dog I’m around
- Learning to share toys with my Golden foster brothers
- Need a medium/large, neutral temperament dog to be my companion and “mentor” as I’m learning all about the world around me. The dog should be confident, but kind…one who’ll keep me in check when needed

Status with Cats
No cats or small critters

Favorite Toys
- Stuffies and squeaky toys, but I’m a proud “stuffy/squeaky toy murderer”. I need brands such as Fluff and Tuff, Go Dog, Huggle Hound, Tuffy, etc. and must be monitored or your floors will be covered with white fluff (just like it’s snowing inside, LOL!)
- Love to play fetch with balls and frisbees, but need help learning to bring them back. Use “trade for a treat” and I’ll learn to retrieve in no time
- Need entertaining enrichment toys such as frozen peanut butter Kongs, Toppl, lick mats, snuffle mats, etc.
- Need chew bones such as Himalayan chews, beef collagen bones, etc. I need chew bones where I can engage my back molars

Energy Level
- Typical high energy older puppy, but with my exercise needs met I’ll settle down nicely to snuggle
- Evening zoomies where I need to go outside and run it out, then I’ll relax
- Must have LOTS of exercise – power walking, jogging, hiking, swimming, etc.
- Must have not only significant physical exercise, but also daily mental stimulation and canine enrichment

House Trained
- Sit at the door and bark when I need to go out *** AGN highly recommends “poochie bells” so I have a clear method of communication
- I go out every two to three hours on a regular schedule as my foster family is retired

Crate Trained
CANNOT be crated due to spending too much time in the crate in the past

House Manners
- Puppy Proof! Puppy Mischievous and Learning!
- Shoes, pillows, children’s toys, etc. are fair game so keep them put away – make sure I have LOTS to chew toys
- Counter surf so it’s your responsibility to put everything up. I jump on furniture, run “zoomies” in the house, etc. I’m all your typical older puppy!
- Free roam with my foster dog siblings during the day
- Sleep on a dog bed in the master bedroom at night
- Couch snuggler – love to cuddle with you!

Leash Manners
- Work in progress. Just learning to walk on a leash and I’m strong, but doing great walking wtih my Golden foster brothers – I check in to make sure you’re coming, too
- Spook easily right now with new things and loud sounds, but getting better daily
- Leash walking every single day, multiple times per day if possible, is important for me
- My “Walk Your Dog With Love” harness is critical so I learn how to walk without pulling
- I need both physical exercise, canine enrichment and mental stimulation so allowing me to sniff on my casual walks is important

Exercise
- Must have lots of physical exercise – walks, jogging, hiking, etc.
- Must also have lots of mental stimulation and canine enrichment to exercise my brain – Nose works, ACE free works, dog puzzles, snuffle mats, lick mats, Bobs – A-Lot, frozen peanut butter Kongs,Topples and just sniffing and exploring new places
- MUST have LOTS of playtime with my dog companion and dog friends to meet my social and exercise needs
- Without enough exercise (physical and mental), both of us will be unhappy! I must have this to thrive!
- If you’re not up for these critical things I need, then I’m not the right Golden for you!

Car Rides
- Work in progress and doing great with the help of my furry foster siblings. I follow them right in and out of the car
- Ride well once in the car
- Need to associate the car with positive things such as parks, hiking, pup cups…fun adventures!
- Let me find treats waiting on me in the backseat so that I associate the car with good things

Basic Commands
- Sit and I’ll come when called
- Never taught any commands or had any basic home training, so I need force free/positive reinforcement training **AGN recommends DogsandKat.com for formal training
- Very smart and eager to please so I learn quickly

Storm Phobia/Fears
- Everything is just new and I’m learning – Be patient with me!
- No storm phobia, but loud noises are scary
- Startled by a few random everyday things because they’re new to me – the garage door going up and down, some thresholds, vacuums, etc. I seem to be especially fearful of things with long handles – I’m learning and doing great!

Things I need in my Forever Home
- An experienced dog owner who fully understands that I’m learning things for the first time. Someone must understand my past and be fully committed, patient and ready to help me learn the world and how to exist in it. I need someone who’s fully focused on helping me thrive
- Someone who’ll understand and work with my anxiety induced over-stimulation/excitement. Someone must be kind, calm and willing to help me feel safe and secure through exercise, mental stimulation and a stable routine
- Active family that likes to exercise daily by taking lots of walks/jogging, hikes and fun outdoor adventures. I need a family that loves exercise and fun outdoor activities and wants a doggy companion on leash by their side
- Someone who doesn’t work, works from home or works part time as my human(s) must have plenty of time to work with me and meet my needs. I’m used to my foster family being home with me and my furry siblings. I thrive in this environment
- Force free/Positive reinforcement obedience training classes REQUIRED – this will help us bond and build our relationship… and it’s so much fun. ***AGN recommends DogsandKat.com
- Must have a stable temperament, neutral dog companion who’ll be a mentor dog to help me learn and play with me. The dog should be an adult and not a senior as I’d be too much for a senior dog. I’d likely prefer a male buddy as that’s what I know best
- Children are not preferred at this time as the focus needs to be on me right now learning and overcoming my past. If there are children in the home, they should be older and sturdy on their feet as I jump in excitement and could knock them down. They need large dog experience and know how to respect the boundaries of a dog,
I’m a bit of a project through no fault of my own and doing exceptionally well each day! I’m the true definition of a rescue dog who’s blossoming into an incredible success story. Although my start in life was difficult, I still have a heart full of love to embrace all the wonderful things that life has to offer. I’m thriving each day on my journey and looking for someone to join me as I learn how to be the dog I’m meant to be. Remember that I’m an older puppy in the “teenager” stage and everything that comes with that. I’m not a perfect dog, no dog is…I’m the result of humans NOT providing my needs. So, are you ready to commit the time and energy to meet my needs? I require lots of exercise and force free training as I learn to enjoy life to the fullest. My heart full of love is here for YOU if you’re ready to build a life full of happiness with me! Let’s make a lifetime of memories together!
