Meet Jasper
Hi, I’m Jasper. I’m an almost 1 year old Golden Retriever. DOB: 2/2/2024. I’m approximately 55 pounds. I’m a gorgeous red, field Golden who’s full of energy and love!
I was surrendered to AGN for typical puppy challenges such as high energy, mouthing, jumping and guarding my bully stick from my humans. Resource guarding is a natural instinct of all dogs, especially learning puppies. I just needed some work to learn to share. I now know “trade for a treat”. I’m ready to find my forever family so we can learn and grow together. So if you’re active, love the outdoors with a dog by your side and enjoy the fun and the challenges of an older puppy, keep reading….
Attributes

Personality Traits
Have you ever had a field line Golden? We’re high energy and awesome! Sweet, smart, social, spunky, playful, energetic, persistent, curious, vocal, and fun! I’m a loving, velcro shadow who likes to explore, run and play! I’m also quick to bark to communicate with you. Sometimes I have a lot of “words”. I’m your typical adolescent Golden who’s learning… sweet, happy, and cuddly one minute and then I can transform to the classic “toddler” where I’m quite puppy-ish, and all that comes with it. I can be like a toddler who’s tired and won’t take a nap…a toddler who’s persistent to get what I want. It’s a phase and I need an experienced dog owner who gets it. It’s part of having a young, energetic Golden. I sometimes resource guard things I consider high value such as bully sticks, peanut butter bones, etc. The more I have those high value things, the less high value they become. Trading with me for a treat is key…it’s as simple as that…Trade for a Treat! My foster will show you how. I’m the perfect age to work on force free training to maximize my potential, while also learning appropriate boundaries to guide me. I want to please, so we just need to understand each other’s communication. I thrive with physical exercise, mental stimulation and canine enrichment. I’d be a great Golden to participate in dog sports, agility, lure coursing, nose works, etc. I’d also be a great running, cycling or hiking partner. I’m a happy, active, older puppy with a lot of love to share. I’m a special puppy with a bright future!

Status with People
Social butterfly who never meets a stranger. I’m excited to meet everyone. I’m sometimes jumpy in joyful exuberance. Turn your back to me and reward me when I have four paws on the floor. I’m good with children and lived with a pre-teen. Children should be older, sturdy on their feet and experienced with a dog to respect boundaries and not snatch things from me. I love children and love their energy…but, they need to understand mine!

Status with Dogs
Love other dogs! I’d run, wrestle and play with my furry foster siblings non-stop if they wanted and then snuggle up with them on the couch. I’m confident with other dogs, and learn by watching them. I’d do best with confident and active dogs who enjoy playing, sharing toys, snuggling and those who can set boundaries with me. I take guidance well from other dogs, but I’m too much for a submissive dog. I’m like the annoying little brother who always wants to play. LOL! Sometimes a human needs to redirect me to other fun things. On walks, I just observe other dogs and do not try to engage with them.

Status with Cats
Unknown. I don’t show much interest in cats while on walks. I do like to chase critters in the yard, though.

Favorite Toys
ALL OF THEM! The more toys the better as I move from toy to toy, taking them all out of the toy baskets. I sometimes “murder” my stuffies, so I need brands such as Tuffy, Fluff and Tuff, Go Dog, Huggle Hound, Kong, etc. for tough chewers. I don’t have a big ball drive. I love frozen peanut butter Kongs and any type of dog puzzle that challenges me (I’m smart so get the tough ones!).

Energy Level
High energy like a dog athlete who would excel at dog sports on one spectrum and then I can be a “couch potato” when I’m tired. The key is to find the right balance with my exercise and mental stimulation needs as not enough can lead to overstimulation and anxiety. I need a lot of physical exercise, enrichment games and mental stimulation. Mental exercise and enrichment is just as important an physical exertion. I can get play time, running, walking, and still be ready to have more fun. I would be great at agility, nose works, lure coursing, etc. Running, swimming, hiking and cycling with my humans would be great. Without enough exercise and mental stimulation, I will not be able to relax. I’m made for a truly active humans who are excited about doing athletic activities with their dog by their side. A tired pup is a good pup, so keep me active and moving!

House Trained
Yes. I’m still an older puppy so I need to go out often. I go in and out a lot throughout the day with my furry foster siblings. I sit by the door and whimper when I need to go out.
***AGN recommends that you train my to Poochie Bells so I can provide clear communication when I need to go out.

Crate Trained
No, I’m scared and anxious with the crate. There seems to be a past negative association that creates crate fear. I have free roam in the home and sleep in bed with my foster family at night.

House Manners
PUPPY PROOF! It’s your responsibility to put up anything you don’t want me to have! I’m an older puppy who gets into things. I’m curious and put things in my mouth because it’s new to me. I especially love soft things like pillows, couch throws, socks, towels, books, etc. If it’s accessible to me, I assume it’s mine, so put it up if you don’t want me to have it. I investigate what’s on the counters, so keep them clean and free of food sitting out. PUPPY PROOF! Remember…I’m a puppy, so make sure I have lots of toys and chews to redirect me to. Keep me busy, so that I don’t get bored. The interesting thing is that I don’t bother a thing when you’re away from home. I just wait for you come home to me.

Leash Manners
Good on leash for my age. My Walk Your Dog With Love harness is key to reduce pulling. Allowing me to sniff on my walks is important for mental stimulation. Let me sniff!

Exercise
Older pup with LOTS of energy, so I must get significant daily exercise and playtime…walking, running, hiking, swimming, running and romping with my dog friends. I’d be a great jogging, cycling or hiking partner. I’d also be great at dog sports or nose works as I’m so smart.

Car Rides
Good in the car, but I get board sometimes and become restless! Consider taking a lick mat or peanut butter kong for me to work on if it’s a long drive.

Basic Commands
Highly intelligent and highly trainable with force free/positive reinforcement methods. Punitive methods create fear. Do not get frustrated with me! Communicate kindly so that I can understand and motivate me with reward. I’ve been to a few basic obedience training classes with my foster mom at DogsandKat.com. I know: Sit, Down (Lie Down). Come, Stay, working on Place.

Things I need in my Forever Home
- Someone who understands the fun, challenges and frustration that comes with older puppies/young Goldens and is committed to all that comes with it. I can be the best puppy ever sometimes and a mischievous pup at other times.
- Experienced dog owner who is patient and understands the specific needs of energetic sporting breeds such as Goldens, Labradors, Chesapeake Retrievers, etc.
- Active family that likes to exercise daily by taking lots of walks/runs, hikes, swimming and fun outdoor adventures. I need a family that loves exercise, fun outdoor activities and wants a doggy companion by their side. I love to run and get my energy out, so I’m ready go and have fun.
- Someone who doesn’t work, works from home or works part time as I’m used to my family being home with me and my furry siblings. I thrive in this environment because I’m young and active and need someone with the time to commit to my exercise and training.
- Positive reinforcement obedience training classes are REQUIRED for all Goldens 2 years old and under – this will help us bond and build our relationship…plus it’s so much fun! ***I’ve been to a few basic obedience training classes with dogsandkat.com and love them.
- Might do okay as an only dog if I get regular socialization and playtime with dog friends. If an only dog, you’ll have to truly be my best friend and play with me A LOT! I’d be prone to get bored and destructive without a dog companion to play with, so you would have to really tire me out physically and mentally each day. I’d need scheduled play dates with dog friends or a day or two at doggy daycare per week, etc.
- Highly prefer a nice and confident, active dog to run and play with who’ll share toys with me, run, romp and wrestle. My persistence to play would annoy a dog that doesn’t like to play. A companion dog should be confident and neutral in temperament. I’d be too much for a senior dog or submissive dog.
- Older children who are dog experienced with sporting breed dogs are great for me! Children should be able to execute “Trade for a Treat” and respect the boundaries of a dog.
- I’d do best with a large backyard to play in. I thrive with the opportunity to really run and play in big, open spaces. I need at least a medium sized yard, no tiny backyards. I get to visit a farm to play and LOVE it!
If you’re looking for a happy, active furry companion that settles down into a calm and relaxed love bug when tired…one who’s sweet, silly, snuggly, and a velcro shadow with major potential…you won’t find a more fun, enthusiastic dog than me. I’m waiting for that special someone who’ll tire me out each day with fun outdoor adventures, continue my force-free/positive reinforcement training, and offer me unconditional love and cuddles. Could you be that special someone to make my dreams come true?
