Our Story of Saving Golden Lives

Middle Tennessee Golden Retriever Rescue (MTGRR) was established in 1998 by a small group of dedicated volunteers who loved Golden Retrievers and saw a need for a Golden Retriever Rescue in Middle Tennessee. MTGRR obtained its 501(c)(3) status in 2000. MTGRR changed its name in 2016 to Adopt a Golden Nashville, known as AGN. AGN operates solely on tax-deductable donations to care for the Golden Retrievers and Golden mixes in our rescue. Everyone is a volunteer with no paid staff. AGN operates in a large region covering Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and Northern Alabama. Click here to see a map of our service area and adoption area.

Chester was the first Golden Retriever rescued by AGN. He was rescued shortly after the terrible tornado that hit Nashville in April 1998. Chester’s age was estimated to be 13 years old at the time of rescue. He was emaciated, sick and weak. Chester was adopted by our founding Vice President and her husband. With wonderful veterinary care and unconditional love, Chester lived happily for another four years.

Adopt a Golden Nashville has saved thousands of Golden Retrievers and Golden mixes since 1998, averaging approximately 200 dogs per year. We rescue locally and internationally. Most dogs we take into the rescue are pulled from local animal control shelters or surrendered by their owners. Our international rescued Goldens come from the streets and forests of Turkey and the dog meat markets in Asia. Our rescued dogs are fostered in the private residences of our volunteers. This enables AGN to evaluate each dog and identify the optimal family and home environment. AGN will take back our adopted dogs at any time for any reason.
